The spirits of a deceased couple are harassed by an unbearable family that has moved into their home. Barbara (Geena Davis) and Adam Maitland (Alec Baldwin) decide to spend their vacation decorating their idyllic New England country home. However, their plans are interrupted by the arrival of the Deetzes (Catherine O'Hara, Jeffrey Jones), a loud and obnoxious family who quickly make themselves at home.

Barbara and Adam are soon driven to their wits' end by the Deetzes' antics. Desperate, they call upon the services of Betelgeuse (Michael Keaton), a mischievous poltergeist who agrees to help them scare the Deetzes away. However, Betelgeuse soon proves to be more trouble than he's worth, and Barbara and Adam must find a way to get rid of him before he destroys their home.
